Systems Engineering Research

The Systems Engineering Research theme has the following areas of interest :

Autonomous System Optimisation: Exploring the development of the most effective system, within constraints, on the basis of overall system performance and the potential options for system architectures and operational structures. Development of formal scientific and mathematical underpinning to support assurance of military capability and its dependence on the behaviour of autonomous systems.

Assessment of Autonomous System Capability: Work to assess the potential benefits of using autonomous systems, including operational risk, affordability, incremental acquisition and support issues.
Safety and Security of Autonomous Systems : Investigation of techniques to assure the safety and security of autonomous systems, and approaches to certification and accreditation of their behaviour.
Advanced Systems Engineering Techniques : Work to identify and apply the most appropriate systems engineering techniques to optimise the realisation of autonomous and semi-autonomous capability in complex scenarios. Exploring the use of synthetic environments and virtual demonstrators to support all phases of the system lifecycle.
Acceptability of Autonomous Systems in Society : Research into the many 'soft' issues surrounding the development, deployment and dependability of autonomous systems, including social, cultural and legal aspects. Investigation of the human systems issues of the design and operation of autonomous vehicles.
Systems Integration : Research into optimisation of the overall architecture of systems incorporating autonomous elements and enhancing the use of tools for investigating concepts and balancing systems requirements, as well as for training, planning and in the design, prototyping and manufacturing of autonomous systems.
