Communications and Control

The Communication and Control research theme has the following areas of interest :

Communication : Work to improve robustness of communications, dealing with problems of constrained bandwidths, mobile networks, hostile actions, environmental conditions, quality of service and security. Developing approaches to information management to support distributed missions, distributed control and distributed situational awareness. Development of communications systems required for autonomous / semi-autonomous vehicles to integrate into an NEC environment

Control : Investigation of the suitability and performance of various navigation technologies, and the possible benefits to be achieved by the use of data fusion techniques in order to improve mission reliability with reduced human intervention. Addressing the problem of multiple autonomous / semi-autonomous vehicle interaction in order to make best use of the capabilities of available autonomous / semi-autonomous vehicles to maximise mission effectiveness. Investigating how unmanned vehicles must interact with manned systems. Exploring the behaviour required of an individual vehicle or swarm of vehicles to ensure safe operation, and in particular what real-time control features need to be included to achieve this
